Here I am. Sitting in my RV 3/4 deep in a bottle of 2 Buck Chuck (it really is only 2 bucks here in CA), on a Friday night. Having spent the day working hard on projects I’m a little behind on, and the evening on hunting down a place I can buy propane from. I ran out of propane at about 1am last night, the vents were pouring cold air, and I worked until 4am, which means I froze my ass off for 3 hours wrapped in a blanket, clutching my graphic tablet pen between my bare white knuckles whilst hammering out code and conjuring creative motivation from a Red Bull and my iTunes playlist.

For the last year I’ve just been living in San Francisco, I love the city. Everyone does. It’s awesome. I’ve had a lot of time to explore and become a part of the local culture. I’ve hung out in the Castro, surrounded by gays, in the Mission, surrounded by hipsters, Noe Valley, surrounded by strollers, and at the wharf, surrounded by tourists.
I did make it back from Ohio, and business has been going very well. I just returned from a month-long wedding tour. I flew into Chicago, where I meet my friend and his 7 Austrian groomsmen. We drove in a passenger van up to Petoskey, MI, where the sand dunes were amazing. After the wedding, we drove back to Chicago, where I met two friends who were there for a Pearl Jam concert, and they drove me back to my home town, Hudson, Ohio. I spent a week there just in time for my Dad’s 60th birthday. Then took the Amtrak down to Arlington, VA. I stayed with the groom of the next wedding for a few weeks to explore DC and work from coffee shops before playing groomsman on the 26th. Now I’m back in San Francisco, the home base. Life is good.

Well, last year was a blast, and I’m truly lucky to be able to say I lived and worked in an RV for a year while traveling across the country. I witnessed the amazing landscape as it changes across our diverse continent. I met some really great people, and garnished relationships that I won’t likely forget.

Today was hectic. I woke up, worked, took the dog for a walk, worked, drove my scooter back to South San fran, packed up my RV, drove to Millbrea to put her in storage, drove my scooter more…then as I was passing a Red Robin, it dawned on me that they gave me an e-coupon for a free burger good for 14 days surrounding my birthday. I had my lap top in my back pack, so I parked on their side walk and marched in. Read More >
It occurred to me that I hadn’t filled ya’ll in with the current state of my RV. Last you heard was that I was leaking brake fluid hours before I was supposed to be driving 3 hours east to Yosemite Nat’l Forest.

My dream home, only mine would have an RV port.

Allow me to pipe dream: What I want to do is assemble a small group of unlikely characters who are willing to give up their current lives to travel through each major city on the middle part of this continent by RV caravan (yes, like the Pikeys). The travels will be video recorded, but the only ones with cameras would be the ones traveling, the stars of the show videotaping themselves and each other. After all, we’re in an age where blogging is so easy, your grandmother could do it.

I thought this article pretty much hit the lifestyle head on.

11 Ways to Banish Lonely Freelancer Syndrome
I’m still working on #’s 1, 6, 8, and 9 (speed dating, ehdunno). Thanks to friends Natalie and Michael for letting me work from their apartment, #11 is actually a pretty good one. Having a dog around is cool because they’re pretty much sad until you pay attention to them. It makes you feel pretty important.

I’m not for “facts” or “specifics,” but I remember reading somewhere about a group of monks gathering in a large American city (let’s say NYC) to meditate for for a few weeks. During this period of time, crime in that city was noticeably reduced. That says to me that our thoughts have a direct physical effect, not just on ourselves. I’m never a true believer of much but this study works well in a theory about the current state-of-mind in our country. After my last post, and the amazing response I got (I didn’t really expect any response at all, thanks everyone) I realized the post was a little selfish, listing my problems when everyone has them. The thought sort of launched me into some analytics about our economy. I’ve had my losses, but so have many of you. At least a couple of my friends are out of jobs entirely. People seem afraid to invest money at all, business or otherwise, but other bad things are popping up at the same time, unrelated to America’s finances. My brakes going out is a good example. My dad finding out he needs to put a stent in his heart is another. A fraternity brother just killed himself and my friend had her bike stolen yesterday. There are also other examples that have occurred outside of my direct orb of observation. Thinking about all of this has made me wonder how much the media effects the global mindset of Americans, and how much in turn that mindset effects the balance of good fortune.

I booked a spot for my RV at Yosemite National Park a few months ago. Friday morning, excited as hell, I packed up all the loose items in the RV, emptied my grey and black water tanks, filled my fresh water tank, unplugged the electric and rolled off the blocks that were keeping my RV level. So far so good - Wait! I can’t stop! The brakes are shot! Read More >
I haven’t been up to much lately. I mean, aside from Halloween. I was the roaming gnome from Travelocity.com. It seemed fitting considering my lifestyle, and all it cost was some felt ($1.60), quilt stuffing ($7.50), and some creative use of what was already in my wardrobe.

This past weekend I had a good time. First, on Friday, I just skateboared around Golden Gate Park for a while, ate an apple and drank a brown bag on hippy hill while reading a book.
Saturday, I went to see the Red Bull Soap box derby. Contestants built soapbox cars to race down Dolores St.
Sunday, I raced in the Tour de Cupcake. An alley cat style bike race where cup cakes eaten at checkpoints counted as time deductions.
Just take a peek at the photos to get the footnotes for this crazy weekend.
